When you need to connect to Skype or listen to an essential business presentation, headphones come in handy instead of using external speakers. Picking up a new pair of headphones is exciting, but how do you get them to connect to your PC? While this may feel like a daunting task, the process takes a few minutes. With these steps, you can enjoy your music or play any game even if you lack technical computer skills.

Connecting Wired Headphones to a PC

If you have wired headphones, you need to find the microphone and headphone connectors on your PC. The sockets are at the front, top, or back of the computer. Some PCs have the round sockets on the side. You’ll see symbols of a microphone and headphone.

Check the metal plugs for the headset which have a green marking while the microphone plug has a pink marking. The plastic part near the metal plug shows small symbols for the headphone.

Insert the green plug into a computer’s headphone jerk and the pink plug into the microphone jack.

Connecting Bluetooth Headphones to a PC

Most wireless headphones manufacturers recommend you to charge the headset for a given period. Charge the headphones and install batteries if the manual advises this.

If you’re using a desktop computer, connect a USB Bluetooth adapter and install the driver from the installation disc. You can enable the adapter by pressing on the right keys or button on the notebook to power on and enable the adapter.

The headphones should have a broadcast, discovery, or locate button, press it to switch them on. Some headsets have a manual switch that you need to turn on manually. Others have an automatic selection and don’t require you to switch anything.

Go to the windows start button and click on devices and printers. Scroll and click on add a device, where you should see the Bluetooth headphones. Click on next and wait for windows to start a wireless connection with the headset.

Use the pairing passcode to pair the headphones with your PC and click on the OK button.

Open a default audio application and press play on the headphones.

The Headset Not Working

If you’re having problems pairing your Bluetooth headphones with your PC, check to see if there’s a problem with the Bluetooth driver. Update the drivers and follow the above steps.

Also, if you get an error message when connecting the headphones to your PC, you may need extra software. Some headphones come with software which you need to install and connect the headphones to your computer.

Sometimes the sound card in your PC may not be compatible with the headphones. Check if the sound card drivers are up to date from the manufacturer’s site. Download the drivers and trust your headphones again.
