Nowadays, most manufacturers are more concerned with producing something inexpensive than they are with producing something with long-lasting qualities. If you’re looking for a high-quality Bluetooth speaker, you need to research before buying anything. An audiophile will want higher quality sound coming from their speaker and will have to go up in price to find it. Cambridge SoundWorks has been around for decades and blends their expertise in the industry with modern design techniques to provide a speaker unique in design and sound quality.

The Oontz Angle 3

[amazon box=”B016XTADG2″]

This speaker plays bigger sound than it looks like it would. It is ideal for someone on a budget and wants a clear sounding speaker for travel. This speaker comes nowhere close to a home stereo system in terms of sound quality, but it works great as a just-in-case speaker to grab-and-go when you want music during long hikes and sunny beach days. The overall sound quality is above average for its price tag, but it’s not the same richness and fullness as similar-sized speakers from Bose or Sony.

Product Specs

The exterior of the Oontz Angle 3 is designed with premium lightweight material that resists up to 12.5 liters of water per minute, along with resisting dust and sand. However, it is not waterproof. It can withstand spray and splashes, but it can’t be partially or fully submerged or left in a wet environment for an extended period as this causes unrepairable damage. The ports are not water resistant; you must close the flap when using near water.

This portable speaker delivers adequately rich sound despite its small size and relatively low price. It’s great for watching TV and movies, listening to music, or playing video games. Speakers like this also make a good travel gadget due to its rugged build and a 2200mAh capacity battery that holds up to 12 hours of battery life.

The triangle design makes this speaker stand out from the crowd; most Bluetooth speakers on the market are sporting the rectangle look. It weighs about 10 ounces and is 2.5 by 5.25 by 2.75 inches. It’s about the size of a 12-ounce soda can, so it’ll fit in any cup holder for easy storage. It’s a great accessory for sunny (or rainy) days out on the golf course. The two long non-slip rubber “feet” help keep it sliding around on whatever surface you put it on. There are no sharp edges or corners to prevent damage to other belongings when stored in a backpack or bag. There are a few options available for a black, blue, red, or gray grille with the black rubberized covers on each side.

The cabinet has a strong rubberized construction that is ultra lightweight, but it is still strong enough to take on mild knocks and falls. It also has two powerful built-in, what appear to be, 45mm neodymium stereo drivers with separate left and right channels for realistic vocals. The two channels make sure you experience sound from the exact direction it is coming from as seen on screen. For example, if the source is situated to the right of the screen, the sound will be heard more clearly from the right channel and vice versa. To compound this effect, the speaker backs it up with rich bass from its special downward-facing passive bass radiator.

Sound Quality Of The Oontz Angle 3

The quality of these little Bluetooth speakers comes down to expectation and personal preference. If you expect a little speaker like the Oontz Angle 3 to sound like your home surround sound system, you’ll be greatly disappointed by most, if not all, Bluetooth speakers. Some individuals may not be satisfied with the quality of bass the speaker produces since it is lower quality than name-brand speakers like Bose, but it is still a quality speaker at an affordable price.

The small size prevents them from reaching the low frequencies required to experience certain bass performances as they were meant to be heard. So these are not the greatest devices for music that relies heavily on bass sounds. However, when you take the price and size of the speaker into consideration, it produces respectable sound quality. It still sounds better and louder than some competitors at the same price and the harmony of elements is highly present. It’s no wonder why it was the number one selling Bluetooth speaker on Amazon for two years in a row.

The sound is best in mid-range and has a decent amount of high-end detail. And this little speaker does well in quiet places and in open spaces, but the sound doesn’t carry too far. It fits well into the water bottle holder on a backpack and has no problems being heard at the park or on a hike, but it definitely isn’t something to be used for parties or large groups of people. This is best suited for medium-sized rooms, dorms or small get-togethers to play some tunes in the background. Like with a lot of inexpensive speakers, performance is a little uneven, but it also depends on the type of content being played.

A special grille is incorporated to separate the precision acoustic drivers from the bass radiator; this ensures their sounds don’t get muddled together. It keeps all distortion and sound disturbances to a minimum and helps to make sure the audio output more distinct even at high volume levels. This is due to the speaker’s digital signal processor (DSP). It limits the maximum volume and also strips out certain frequencies to prevent the speaker from distorting. If you stand the speaker vertically, the grille isn’t restricted, reducing the bass by giving it more exposure. Whether it is placed horizontally or vertically, there’s no risk of diminishing sound quality, unlike the JBL Flip 3.

At low volume is when the sound starts to drop in quality. The bass disappears, and the overall sound is just tiny. Higher priced speakers normally don’t have this issue because they carry better internal hardware. When compared to the DknightMagicBox, the volume levels are nearly identical, but there is something better sounding about the Angle 3. Depending on the content, the sound can become distorted at the highest couple notches of volume, but even that isn’t too noticeable. There was never any kind of rattling, loose vibrations, or unwanted tones while using this speaker.

Connectable Accessories

Alexa, similar to Siri, is Amazon’s digital AI assistant built into the collection of Amazon’s Echo devices. The Echo Dot is a small version of the Echo the plugs into speakers, and the Amazon Tap is the battery-powered version of the Echo Dot. Any of these (along with other Echo devices) will work with the Angle 3 speaker.

Devices like the these and the Chromecast Audio are great technological companions for your Bluetooth speakers. If you’re after extra range and don’t want to be bothered by notifications or incoming calls coming over the Bluetooth speaker, you can connect your phone or tablet any of these devices, then connect the AI device to the speaker with either Bluetooth or the auxiliary cable.

Power Saving Feature

The speaker has a power saving feature included in the firmware. To conserve battery, it stops playing automatically after 15 minutes of no audio. When it is plugged in, it will stay on until the user turns it off. Turn off the device by pressing and holding the power button for three seconds. It is safe to use to the speaker while it is charging and to keep it plugged in even when fully charged. When the Angle 3 is connected to the Echo Dot, the power saving feature is disabled.

Conclusion

The Oontz Angle 3 is a great little speaker to keep in your backpack for anyone looking for an inexpensive alternative to low-quality phone and tablet speakers. There are also a lot of laptops don’t have the best speakers, built-in speakers. When comparing it to other Bluetooth speakers, it has little advantages, other than the price. Other speakers within the price range have better water-proof ratings, but not as long battery life. One thing that the Angle 3 has that small speaker don’t is stereo-quality sound. Cambridge SoundWorks squeezed in two precision drivers and a bass radiator. This is rare in affordable speakers; It’s hard to design a small speaker packed with so much technology that doesn’t sound muffled and muddled. If you are looking for a cheap first-time-buying option, this is perfect. Considering the price, the size, and the sound quality, among its other features, it’s a speaker that’s very much worth its price tag.
